The entire piece is underpinned by a sustained, ethereal pad sound that serves as a spatial foundation, creating an expansive, hazy, and almost time-stilled atmosphere of melancholy. Against this backdrop, the delicate, high-frequency tinkling of metal clappers and bells is like fragments of memory or silent tears glinting as they fall—shimmering yet fragile—infusing the somber atmosphere with a touch of lively sorrow and a piercing, penetrating quality.
The melodic and emotional core is jointly carried by the xiao flute and the guzheng. The dongxiao, with its distinctive plaintive and desolate timbre, conjures up a mournful, free-rhythm melody that seems to embody sighs and sobs themselves; meanwhile, the guzheng, through sparse plucking and fluid glissando techniques, evokes auditory images of trembling heartstrings and lingering, ethereal reverberations. The two elements intertwine in a free, improvisational “scattered-beat” form, unbound by a regular rhythm, precisely capturing and amplifying the sense of disorientation, lingering persistence, and uncontainable natural flow that characterizes sorrowful emotion.
