Originally titled “Fleeting Paths Crossed,” in C minor, the piece’s Chinese name is “A Splendid Encounter.” To underscore themes of chance encounters and missed connections, the entire piece employs the C# minor scale in its melodic writing, lending it a lyrical, poetic quality. However, in the harmonic arrangement, it borrows chords from the relative major key of E major, thereby blurring the tonality between major and minor. The entire piece is built on an E major ii–V–I–IV chord progression (C#m9–Amaj7(#11)–B7(11)–Emaj9), while the intro employs a ii–V–I–ii sequence, beginning on the sixth degree. In the fifth?degree phrase, a V7 chord is used—the dominant chord of the harmonic minor—thereby imbuing the resolution from V to I with a poignant sense of regret and lost opportunity. The subsequent brilliant cadenza unfolds from the motif 6451 and its variants, with the left hand emphasizing extended arpeggios to accentuate the splendor of the encounter; its structure largely consists of sawtooth?shaped arpeggios linked by ascending and descending passages. At the conclusion, short notes heighten the sense of missed opportunity; the dynamics gradually diminish and the tempo slows, as the notes grow sparser, underscoring themes of encounter and fate, ultimately leading to emotional acceptance.
