“Fan” is a work for string quartet and double solo instruments-violin and cello. On the base of chamber music, it drives an indescribable mysterious mood with a sharp rhythm.
The string quartet builds a calm texture, but instead of the long lines of traditional chamber music, it is replaced by repetitive rhythms, jumping staccato and carnon-like chases between parts. The rhythm is as precise as machinery, but it keeps shifting in the subtlety, as if a precise but puzzle-heavy device is running on its own.
The solo violin and cello are the guides and lost in this maze of sound. The two sometimes form a rapid dialogue, and sometimes they fall into the short sentences of the cycle, as if looking for an exit but constantly turning back. The overtones in the treble area and the plucking in the bass area appear alternately, and the repetition of rhythm gives the work the kinetic energy to advance, while the harmony always moves between tonality and atonality, which makes the audience fall into a state of both sobriety and trance in the gap between familiarity and strangeness.
It is suitable for advertising films and promotional films that need to show exploration, pursuit or inner game, and can also be matched with scenes with a sense of technology, city or surreal style. Its rhythms provide a rhythmic fulcrum for the picture, while the uncertain direction of the harmony makes every viewing as unknown as the first.
