“Lion Awakening” is a purely ethnic percussion work, inspired by the lion awakening ceremony in Lingnan traditional culture, through rich percussion timbre and rhythm changes, depicting the complete process of the lion’s awakening from deep sleep to jubilant dance. The work is divided into two narrative parts:
Part 1: Awakening
It opens with a very weak rhythm, simulating the breathing and dreams of the lion in its deep sleep. Gradually join the group to play the drum, the drum from sparse to dense, through the drum, drum from far and near the level of advancement, symbolizing the awakening of the pulse of the earth.
Part II: Leaping
Cut into the lion dance scene with the rapid rhythm of a small drum and the high-pitched sound of cymbals. Create a dynamic of jumping and swinging, and the dialogue between the lion drum and the Guangdong plate drum simulates the two lions playing. The climactic passage all instruments form a galloping stream in a Cannon-style stack, interspersed with the brilliant metal sound of the gong. The ending part reproduces the theme rhythm and gradually reaches the peak, stopping abruptly in the two-beat sonorous unison, leaving the aftertaste of the spirit of the lion dance.
