“Photophobia” is an atmospheric work for a string chamber quartet and a pair of solo instruments-violin and cello-with the piano only embellished with clear high notes. The overall texture is light, the voice is sparse, and there is an indescribable uneasiness hidden in the silence.
The string quartet forms the base of the sound, with sustained long notes and faint overtones like the slow movement of light and shadow in the dark room. The solo violin and cello are like two hesitant conscious bodies, the former whispers tentatively in the high-pitched area, while the latter hovers in the low with plucking and extremely weak kneading-they always avoid the bright timbre, as if they have an instinctive resistance to the light itself. The piano’s embellishments are restrained and precise, and the single notes or short clusters of notes in the treble area are like moonlight passing through the gaps in the blinds, casting fleeting reflections.
It is especially suitable for advertising films in suspense atmosphere, propaganda films that need to show the inner contradictions of characters, or scenes depicting claustrophobic space and dusk. Its blank space provides breathing space for the picture, while the lingering tension makes every frame of the picture hide narrative tension.
